Contentment, a modern bad word in an age of success and sophistication; the popular argument may be: it’s not that im not content but im not a conformist. Contentment is the hidden pearl in churches, its not easy to find but we all know its there.
The modern thought that consist in being religiously firm and ceremonial has bullied the concept of what a godly person is. A godly person may be righteous, but we want to hear how we all are not perfect but not how to be holy. A godly person may be transparent, but we want to know of our superficial weakness but not to be confronted.
The value of godliness and contentment is not confined to earthly definitions of piety but to the eternal identifications as heirs in Christ. The hidden talent of saying thanks Lord for what I have, is lost in the cultural doctrine of self-sufficiency which never ends achieving but its always rotating. The more I have, the more I worth, the more I worth, the more respect I get; we tell God it doesn’t matter the way you have defined me.
Because godliness and contentment is not about being better than others but is about being defined, approved and in submission in the Sovereign hand of God. A godly person may not be worldly successful but its a hard worker and steward of God’s gifts and enabling. Contentment may be seen as a lack of progress by te world but it is saying I have enough, now let me be with my God.
We don’t prize the worth of these things because we ignore their value, and so many times we do it because we ignore the One who calls us to live this way. A poor knowledge and view of God will make the christian live look like a tedious favor to the One whom created us. Such arrogant thought comes from being whom their very breath and heart-beat is sustained by the one they ignore.
1 Timothy 6:6-10
6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
